The Government of India issued a directive asking socialmedia companies to voluntarily curb fake news and misinformation related to thecoronavirus on their platforms. The move is among the most important stepsadopted by the Indian government in their bid to tackle the rise of COVID-19cases in the country
The Government of India has warned all active WhatsApp groupadmin and social media users that posting false and misleading information onCovid-19 pandemic on mobile social platforms such as Whatsapp, TikTok,Facebook, Twitter and Youtube will attract penal action under IPC Section 505and rules related to contagious diseases management and Disaster ManagementAct, 2005 which provides the legal framework for action against rumour-mongeringbesides restrictions on movement.
